"What is art for me? Art is my refuge and my adventure. It is what I go home to, it is what I leave home for."

A multidisciplinary visual artist currently based in Paris, Bonobithi trained as a painter for 16+ years with Indian artist Sayaram Waghmare, before beginning to practise art full time since 2021. Her eclectic academic background, beginning from a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, to a yearlong training in art conservation at Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, Belgium, and a diploma in art history from London Art College, lends her creative voice a multidimensional diversity core to the collaborative interdisciplinary nature of the contemporary art scene. Having participated in various group and solo shows internationally, Bonobithi’s works have been extensively displayed in cities across India, Indonesia, Italy, UK, Spain and Belgium. Currently pursuing her Master in Fine Arts in Transdisciplinary New Media at Paris College of Art, she is interested in understanding geocultural displacement in the post-colonial South Asian world through a combination of diverse media, including interactive new media art.

Artist Statement

The thematic focus of my current practice is the South Asian historic-cultural landscape and understanding the fragmentation and layers of post-colonial identity of the developing world. This derives largely from my own personal history placed in the broader context of the Indian subcontinent’s geopolitical history. I am interested in psychogeography, which explores psychological perception and understanding of space. My work takes a multidisciplinary approach in attempting to decolonise our understanding of identity and cultural inheritance; ultimately seeking to answer the question: “What does it mean to be human in today’s world?”

Art, for me, takes the form of a visual language, focused upon storyline, narrative and representation, instead of the notion of artwork as a product/object. The process of creation is a meditative practice from which a story results. Currently, I work in diverse visual media including painting (oil, aquarelle, ink and pastels), sculpture (clay and resins), collage and new media.

Philosophically, my greatest influence is what I like to call a geocultural extension of the Gaia Hypothesis by James Lovelock, a scientific theory that postulates that all living organisms and their inorganic surroundings on our planet are integrated to form a single and self-regulating complex system. In other words, the dynamic equilibrium of a functional world exists because every element and process in it are interconnected and interdependent. I believe this theory can be extended to a global socio-historic context of our modern civilisations- the anthropogenic systems of human societies are centred around a flux of interconnection; each system thrives on the stability of its surrounding systems; a disbalance in one affects the others. My work explores the threads of these interconnections and continuity in streams of history, geopolitics, intergenerational movement and cultural inheritance.

My series and projects revolve around this philosophical focus, particularly “Circularity and Rapture”, which delves into reinventing an extinct synesthetic art form in the Indian subcontinent, and “Dance of Shadows”, which resuscitates a centuries-old Indian-Indonesian cultural link through shadow puppetry. My current project “Distance\\Displacement” explores geocultural displacement in the fabric of Indian Partition and Bangladesh Liberation War, weaving together a combination of traditional (painting, sculpture, photography) and interactive new media art. The reason for this dichotomy is the twofold nature of the displaced condition: the first is the inner journey, of understanding one’s lack of belonging and relationship to time and space, which is addressed by the creative outlet of building a record of emotional fragmentation and sense of identity; the second is the outer journey, of the need of empathy, recognition, acceptance and integration in an alien society, one that interactive new media art aptly addresses. Employing the contrasting aesthetics and broadened scope of these two formats lends my visual storytelling greater depth and multidimensionality.
