A sky-lantern carries a drop of light from the earth towards the night sky magnificent in its cosmic brilliance. Thus, it becomes a metaphor for what connects the individual to the universal, the staircase between the two floors of the mind’s mansion. The paintings in this series are a collection of sky lanterns, offerings of the artist to the greater self. An artist is the seismometer of the human predicament. Thus, it falls to the artist to uphold and contain the fire created from the big and small everyday sacrifices of the human heart in its relation to the socio-political, cultural and historical weight of the age. The blobs of fire in these lanterns do not attempt to match the flame of the stars, nor find a place among that array of endless cosmic display; instead, are merely vessels of hope, to lift the human spirit towards the infinite.
